In 2024 the team earned the schools very first Sectional title in swimming, and they followed that performance up with another championship yesterday at Jay County High School. The victory yesterday also capped the season to remain undefeated for the second year in a row. In the last 2 years, the boys swim and dive team have not lost a meet are an outstanding 35-0 with an average win margin of around 50 points. Yesterday, the team won by 97 points over the runner-up. The other victory to be celebrated is for the second year in a row Coach Justin Uptgraft was selected Coach of the Year. This is the third time in his career he has won the honor. Out of the total 11 tickets possible to state yesterday, Bluffton had the most top finishes sending 4 events to the state meet along with a regional qualifier. Isaac Wheeler in Butterfly was the first ticket punched winning the event for the second year in a row. Just 2 events later the 200 Free Relay of Athan King, Rhett Gerber, Isaac Wheeler, and Noah Brooks punched their ticket to the state meet by dropping 6 seconds from their seed time. This is the first time in school history the team has won this event. The very next event, Noah Brooks punched his individual ticket by winning the 100 Backstroke again this year. On the final event of the day, Rhett Gerber, Griffin Linderwell, Isaac Wheeler, and Noah Brooks won the 400 Freestyle Relay, also an event that those boys won two years in a row. There were three other events that were incredibly close where Bluffton had an opportunity to send more to the next level. Blake Reinhard did just that and edged out the next place by only .35 points in diving. After the semi-finals round Blake was in 7th place, but still in the conversation for earning a top 4 spot which would advance him to Tuesdays regional meet. After the final 3 rounds, Blake had inched his way above the competition and locked in a 4th place finish. Only .35 points separated 4th to 5th place and proving that it’s not over till it’s over. The closest finish of the day came with Isaac Wheeler in breaststroke. In a race that was neck and neck the whole way, Wheeler walked away with a runner-up finish by just .05 of a second. Rhett Gerber also finished as a sectional runner-up in the 200 Freestyle. Rhett dropped an incredible 7 seconds in the past two days to earn the 2nd place finish.
